One of our stops on the Avalon Burgundy and Provence River Cruise was at the tiny medieval village of Viviers (pronounced Vi Vi A). This entire village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in southern France. It remains something of an insider tip since tourists are rarely seen here.
Our guide Usha met us at the port and filled us with fascinating stories of every-day life and of the town’s history as she walked with us through her village on the way to the fortified hilltop enclosure of the Upper City.
At the Cathedral of St. Vincent on the summit, we were treated to a magnificent organ concert. This Cathedral is the smallest cathedral in Europe, and the concert there was truly emotional. Back on the ship, we had another delicious dinner. Click here for Avalon’s recipe for Rack of Lamb with a Herb Crust.
