As you can see, I am focusing on travel quotations. I love them! St. Augustine really focused in on the narrow-minded here.
“Why would I want to go there?” “I know it’s dirty and hot, and the people are all rude.”
You’ve heard these statements from people you probably know. These are the people who are not travelers. They have no interest in seeing anything beyond their known “world”. It is comfortable and safe. And they are happy. I am not out to change their mind. But to me it really is like only reading one author or one type of book.
When you travel to other countries and see other cultures (very different from our own) – you see how much we have in common.
I went to Viet Nam a couple of years ago. Truly, I did not know what to expect. Viet Nam played a large part in my early years. What would these people really be like? How would they react to the Americans? Well, Viet Nam is beautiful. The land and the people. They wanted to talk to us and were proud that we had come back to their country. One day we floated down the Mekong River on a flat boat, passing other boats and small villages. Another flat boat comes beside us and we buy real coconut drinks. Then we stop at a small village, and the children run down to see us. They were smart and witty and happy. Very much like our children. It was a trip I will always remember. My life had expanded – I had read another page in a book that I had not known before.
